LG Innotek Co., an electronic device components making unit of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, said on Thursday that it has won a lawsuit against Japan’s Nidec Corporation over patents related to optical disk drives (ODDs) in electric motors. The suit was raised at the Beijing Intellectual Property Court in China.

Nidec Corp. is world’s top manufacturer of comprehensive motors that produce components for personal computers, consumer appliances, and automobiles. Last year, the company raised 12 trillion won ($10.8 billion) in sales.

The patent Nidec Corp. has allegedly infringed involves technology that prevents foreign substances from flowing in to the inner part of the motors. Nidec Corp. has been given 30 days to file an appeal to the court or otherwise must compensate LG Innotek for damages for infringing the patent. It will also be banned from producing or selling related products.

Industry observers note that the latest preliminary ruling favoring LG Innotek is meaningful in that it has won against a major components manufacturer from Japan that has long been considered a leading country of technology. They note that LG Innotek has proved its competitiveness in world’s patent race and its leading motor technology.
