South Korea’s second largest oil refiner GS Caltex Crop. broke grounds to build a demo plant to produce biobutanol, a biofuel that can be used as a substitute for gasoline, from inedible biomass such as waste wood and grains for the first time in the world, the company said on Thursday.

GS Caltex will spend a total of 50 billion won ($45 million) to build the plant that can produce 400 tons of biobutanol annually at a site of 15,000 square meters in Yeosu, south Joella Province in Korea. The plant will be used to pilot produce biobutanol from inedible biomass such as waste wood and grains.

Biobutanol is an alcohol that can be produced from fermentation of biosugar. When blended with gasoline, it can be used as an alternative fuel.

The company claimed that it is the first company in the world to conduct a test production of biobutanol from inedible biomass such as waste wood and grains, while bioethanol, produced from crops like corn, is already in wide use as an alternative fuel in countries like Brazil.

The construction is scheduled to be completed by the second half of 2017. The company would determine whether to start commercial production after analyzing the feasibility of the processing through test production. It pins high hopes on its biobutanol production even in this low-oil price era, as it has developed a high-performance strain that boosts yield rate, the company said.
