A senior official at Samsung Electronics Co. was arrested for trying to steal a core chip-making technology. The news comes amid enhanced courting from China that has been aggressive to strengthen domestic semiconductor industry.

The international crime investigation unit at Gyeonggi Police Agency on Thursday arrested an unnamed executive vice president at Samsung Electronics of the semiconductor division on suspicion of committing industrial espionage.

On July 30, a security guard at the company reportedly found confidential documents in his car during a routine security check. The company immediately searched his house and called the police upon discovering thousands of classified documents he kept at his house.

The stolen technology is said to be related to the application processor (AP) manufacturing technology. AP is the core part in smartphones that works like the human brain. The Korean tech giant succeeded in mass producing 14 nanometer mobile AP that incorporates three-dimensional FinFET structure and is 20 percent more powerful and 35 percent more energy efficient. It has been manufacturing Apple’s A9 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipsets with this technology.

The suspect is said to have already submitted his letter of resignation to the firm. The police said that it would conduct further investigations to find out whether the technology has already been leaked.
