Former vice chairman of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) Chung Chan-woo is expected to be appointed as the chairman at the Korea Exchange (KRX), South Korea’s bourse operator.
The recommendation committee of the KRX announced on Thursday that they have decided to put Chung on the short list for the chairmanship as a sole contender. He is expected to be tapped for the head of KRX at a shareholders’ meeting scheduled on September 30.
The former bureaucrat was dubbed as a favorite among six contenders. The incumbent head Choi Kyung-soo didn’t apply for a second term.
Under the current law, the chairmanship of the KRX is decided at its shareholders’ meeting after the recommendation committee shortlists final candidates.
Chung, born in 1963, graduated from Seoul National University and served as vice president of the Korea Institute of Finance and FSC, the country’s financial regulator. He was an aide on the election campaign for President Park Geun-hye in 2007. During the 20th general election, he attempted to get a seat, but failed.
