The South Korean government will introduce certification system on organic or natural cosmetics as to ensure authenticity and safety of the beauty product market that has been growing in explosive pace.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on Wednesday that it will review the revised cosmetics-related law including the adoption of the certification process for natural organic farming cosmetics.

Natural cosmetics generally refer to cosmetics made of ingredients extracted from fruits and flowers, while organic cosmetics refer to those made of organic sources. The country’s organic and natural cosmetics market has been rapidly growing as more consumers are looking for cosmetics containing less toxic chemicals following the deadly humidifier sanitizer scandal in the country that killed about 100 people. However, the absence of accreditation process and system has made it unable for consumers to confirm ingredients of such products.

The MFDS plans to define the criteria for natural or organic farming cosmetics and set standards that could be applied to the certification process. Details on the accreditation process and organizations that will issue related certifications will be determined later, according to the ministry.

The U.S. and Europe do not have the government-backed official standards for natural or organic cosmetics, but they have reliable accreditation organizations, such as NaTrue in Europe that issues its own label to those products that are confirmed to be compliant to its standard after a certification process carried out by independent agencies. The MFDS is said to be considering establishing similar private independent organizations like NaTrue to issue certification.
