Samsung Electronics Co. Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee waiting to become the legal head of Korea’s largest conglomerate and household company appeared in public eyes for the first time since the Galaxy Note7 battery crisis, intentionally visible with the controversial phone in his hand.

The younger Lee who would become a registered board member in October shareholders’ meeting in a symbolic and legally-binding gesture to declare himself the new leader of the company and group walked into the head office building Wednesday morning when a crowd of reporters are usually on standby to cover the weekly Wednesday meeting of chief executives of Samsung Electronics business divisions.

Lee who usually takes a private elevator to avoid the press did not shy away at a time the world’s largest smartphone maker embarked on global face-losing recall program for Galaxy Note7 phones on concerns of the battery catching fire while charging.

He casually was holding a gold-colored Galaxy Note7 in his hand upon being surrounded by a flock of reporters. When asked about the battery crisis that led to an unprecedented large-scale recall program likely would cost the company billions of dollars, Lee jokingly nodded and pointed to a reporter carrying an iPhone. He did not attend the weekly meeting.
