A magnitude-4.5 earthquake struck South Korea’s southeastern city of Gyeongju Monday evening, exactly one week after two rounds of the largest-ever earthquake jolted the same city.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said that the quake, centered about 11 kilometers southwest of the city, took place at 8:33 p.m., and it was found to be an aftershock of the strongest-ever 5.8 earthquake that occurred on September 12.

The recent series of strong earthquakes have left residents in the epicenter and the surrounding areas terrified. The latest quake was felt across the country in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Jeolla Province and even Jeju Island.

Hyundai Motor Co. temporarily shut down parts of its assembly lines in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province for inspection, and hundreds of residents in Daegu in North Gyeongsang evacuated from their houses. The broadcasting of a baseball game at Sajik Stadium in Busan was briefly disrupted due to the quake.

A KMA official said that the latest quake was the strongest aftershock among about 300 trembles felt since the 5.8 and 5.1 earthquakes that took place on September 12. “We are still investigating the cause of the earthquake,” he added.

As the recent quakes have sent the entire nation in fear, many are increasingly calling for measures to improve quake-related disaster management systems in Korea.
