South Korea’s two consumer electronics behemoths - Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.- have ramped up their penetration into the US market of household appliances in the past three years, elbowing out long-time champions such as General Electric Co. and Kenmore, now closely tailing industry leader Whirlpool Corp.

According to US market research firm Stevenson Company, Whirpool led the US consumer electronics market with a 16.1 percent share in the first half this year. LG Electronics closely followed with a share of 15.4 percent and Samsung Electronics Co. 15.3 percent. In the second quarter alone, Samsung Electronics topped the ranking with a 16.7 percent share. The figures are calculated and compiled by Stevenson, which is tracking market shares of companies in the field of core appliances - refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher, dish dryer, oven and microwave - in its TraQline quarterly survey.

This was unthinkable only three years ago, when top three US home appliance manufacturers - GE (15.6 percent), Whirlpool (15.0 percent), Kenmore (14.5 percent) - vied for the top spot in the market. LG Electronics (12.9 percent) and Samsung Electronics (11.5 percent) that were then far behind in the race managed to grab bigger pieces of the market and outpaced two of the champions in a span of three years. The rapid catch-up can be explained by the South Korean firms’ marketing strategies to focus on upscale refrigerators and washing machines.
