LG Electronics Co. has filed a suit against German compressor manufacturer Secop GmbH, asking an Italian court to nullify Secop’s patented technologies for compressors, according to the company Sunday.

LG Electronics’ suit against Secop comes after the German compressor maker in July demanded the South Korean consumer electronics giant damages for alleged infringements of its two patents related to compressor technologies and suspension of the sale of LG’s small-sized compressors.

LG said it has asked the Torino Court in Italy to nullify two compressor patents held by Secop in Europe as they are not at all exclusive technologies of the German firm. LG will fight against the false claims of the rival company to protect its intellectual property, according to Kim Gwang-ho, head of the compressor and motor (C&M) division at LG.

Compressor is a sealed reciprocating pump that is the heart of the cooling system in refrigerators and air conditioners. The two patents under dispute are compressor structure and a muffler used to reduce the noise, which LG claims that are widely used in the industry. LG explained that this is the reason why the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) turned down Secop`s patent applications twice in 2012 and this year.

LG also said its compressor technology is different from that of Secop and plans to prove that through the legal action.

The Korean firm holds 2,700 compressors patents in Korea and an additional 526 patents in the United States as of September. It also has issued 121 compressor-related patents in Europe.

LG has expanded sales of compressors to bolster its home and appliance (H&A) division.
