No casualties and serious damages were reported from two rounds of the largest-ever earthquake that jolted most of South Korea Monday evening.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said a record magnitude-5.8 earthquake, the strongest tremor reported on the Korean Peninsula to date, was detected at 8:32 p.m. near the location some 8 kilometers southwest of the historic city of Gyeongju. The quake was preceded by a 5.1-magnitude tremor detected at 7:44 p.m. in the same region.
The second quake was stronger than the magnitude-5.3 tremor that rocked the Pyongan region in North Korea in January 1980, the KMA said. In South Korea, the previous record was in 2004 when a 5.2 tremor hit Uljin, Gyeongbuk.
Residents in the epicenter evacuated from high-rise apartments and buildings. The second quake was felt in most parts of the country. A combined cycle power plant in Ulsan, not far from Gyeongju, was suspended temporarily.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., the operator of the country`s nuclear plants, said none of its reactors including those close to the epicenter, were affected by the earthquake. A few KTX trains halted operations for a short period of time at some stations and mobile messenger KakaoTalk went offline shortly after the quake.
On Tuesday, a number of South Korean businesses were forced to halt their production and assembly lines for safety inspections in the aftermath of the powerful quake.
