The Korean operation of Swedish furniture group IKEA announced on Friday that it would stop selling 15 kinds of dressers including Malm dressers in compliance with safety standards of Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS).

The agency has recently conducted a safety test on dresser products selling in Korea and recommended sale suspension and voluntary recall of 27 kinds of dressers to seven companies including IKEA.

Earlier, IKEA had stopped selling drawers in North American region as children in the U.S. were crushed to death when Malm dressers toppled on them. However, the furniture company continued to sell similar products in Korea and China.

The domestic agency has recently tested whether drawers topple over or not when they are not fixed on the wall. The agency recommended recall or sale suspension to risky products.

After the test, KATS adopted standards of American Society of Testing Materials International (ASTM) as preliminary safety regulation of Korea. The regulations would be applied until it comes up with own set of regulations are made.

“The best way to prevent tip-over incidents is to fix drawers on the wall and we have offered devices to fix them on the wall and assembly instructions for several decades when selling products,” said an official of IKEA Korea.
