South Korea’s Fashion Group Hyungji Co. has acquired De Castelbajac, the fashion label of French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a pioneer of the avant-garde who dressed the late Pope John Paul II, Lady Gaga and Madonna.

This is a long-held wish come true for Hyungji Chairman Choi Byoung-oh, who started from the scratch about three decades ago as a clothing wholesaler in Dongdaemun market to build a fashion empire that generates average annual sales of $1 billion.

In a recent interview with the Maeil Business Newspaper, Choi said it Hyungji decided to acquire PMJC, which owns global trademark right to De CastelBajac this year, following the previous acquisition of the brand’s trademark right in Asia last year. He said the price cannot be revealed due to terms of agreement which would be finalized by the end of September.

Hyungji launched Castelbajac Golfwear last year and handbag and accessory brand “Jean-Charles de Castelbajac” last month. From next spring, the Korean firm plans to unveil “Castelbajac Living” and offer ready-to-wear clothing lines for women, men and kids. Hyungji also plans to launch the French label in China by 2018. Choi said the company’s biggest goal is to list the Castelbajac unit on the Korean bourse over the next three years and make the company generate sales of 200 billion won. He eyes revenue of 10 billion won from trademark royalties.
