S. Korea’s KEPCO pushes for creating super grid in Asia

State utility firm Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) is discussing a plan to create super grid linking Asia with power and IT companies of China, Japan, and Russia.

KEPCO President Cho Hwan-eik on Thursday met with CEO Masayoshi Son of Japan-based IT giant SoftBank, Chairman Liu Zhenya of China-based Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), and CEO Oleg Budargin of Russia-based power company Rosseti in Tokyo, Japan, and discussed the possibility of building power grid and utilizing renewable energy.

The Korean power company has been pushing forward with the plan to create the Smart Energy Belt, a super grid linking Asia using new energy technology. “Connecting Asia with the Smart Energy Belt is not an easy project but nevertheless is a work of absolute necessity,” said Cho.

Cho and Son also have met over a number of occasions and discussed cooperative ways to link the power grid in Asia including the new energy project in Mongolia.

Cho during his meeting in Tokyo also proposed to form CEO and Executive Committee meeting for faster decision making and execution of the project and to use the event of the Bitagram International Exposition of Electric Power Technology in November in Korea to raise public awareness on the campaign.
