A South Korean startup Lumi Green Co. will supply light-emitting diode (LED) lighting to Japan-based global automaker Toyota Motor Corp.

Starting September, the Korean lighting products manufacturer based in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, will annually ship more than 20,000 LED lightings it developed on its own to Toyota. It also provided its products to an assembly line of Daihatsu Motor Corp., a subsidiary of Toyota in June last year. The Japanese small car maker reportedly chose Lumi Green when LED lamps it had been supplied from other company caused many problems.

Lumi Green’s LED lightings boast long lifespan of more than 100,000 hours while its failure rate is very low at less than one in a million. What makes its LED lightings stand out is their luminous efficacy that reaches 165 lumens per watt, 30 percent higher than the industry average of 100 lumens per watt. Luminous efficacy, one of the most important factors for lightings, is a measure of how well a source of light produces visual light for a given amount of power.

Lumi Green’s competitiveness lies in its patented circuit technology that protects inner components even at high temperatures. With the technology, the company can reduce the number of condensers installed on a printed circuit board to four instead of the industry average of 10, which also results in a lightweight lamp that weighs just around two kilograms.

After testing Lumi Green’s LED lamps on its cars for one year, Toyota decided to receive them and gradually increase the installation to its 20 or more production lines across Japan.
