The South Korean government said on Sunday that it will consider adding more ports of call and vessels for Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. to minimize setbacks in cargo handling of the country’s exports and imports after the country’s largest Hanjin Shipping filed for court receivership last week.

According to the government, in addition to its prior decision to deploy 13 Hyundai Merchant Marine ships on Hanjin Shipping routes - including four 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container carriers on the Asia-southwestern U.S. route from Thursday and nine 6,000 TEU vessels on European routes next week - it will consider expanding ports of call as well as vessels depending demand.

But increasing routes for Hyundai Merchant Marine won’t be sufficient in easing the upset on the trade front as carriers of Hanjin Shipping, have been stranded for days at overseas ports.

Kim Young-seok, maritime affairs and fisheries minister, said that the most urgent task at this point would be to have export cargo that have already been shipped to arrive safely at their final destinations and get unloaded and delivered on time. The minister added that the government will continue to talk with its counterpart governments and terminals through diplomatic offices and related institutions so that cargo can be unloaded as soon as possible.
