Hyundai Motor’s August sales hurt by walkout

South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. saw its August shipment drop 3.1 percent on year to 358,447 units, hurt by union strike and end in sales tax deduction on car purchases.

The auto giant disclosed that it sold 42,112 units at home last month, down 17.6 percent on year. Its overseas sales also dropped 0.8 percent to 316,335 cars.

Avante was the best-selling sedan having sold 6,756 units, while Santa Fe sold the most number of 5,609 units among recreational vehicles. Hyundai Motor hopes for recovery on the global front after release of new models including i30.

Its sister company Kia Motors Corp., on the other hand, saw its overall sales jump 12.2 percent to 219,925 units in August from a year earlier. It struggled on home turf, selling 37,403 units, down 10.4 percent on year. Most cars except K7 were sold less from a year ago. Kia Motors’ overseas shipment reached 182,552 units, up 18.3 percent on year.

GM Korea Co. sold combined 35,971 units at home and abroad, maintaining a similar level as the previous year. Mini car Chevrolet Spark, midsize sedan Malibu, mini commercial vehicles Damas and Labo drove sales. Chevrolet Spark sold 5,850 units in August, exceeding the 5,000 unit threshold for seven straight months.

Renault Samsung Motors Co. sold a total of 15,240 units, up 51.5 percent from a year earlier. SM6 sold 4,577 units, up 1.5 percent from the previous month.

Ssangyong Motor Co., owned by India’s Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., sold 12,178 units, up 3.1 percent from a year ago.
