Samsung Electronics Co. could announce on Friday a recall program for the batteries of its newly-launched flagship premium smartphone Galaxy Note 7 that has raised safety concerns after reports of explosion while charging.

According to industry sources on Thursday, the South Korean electronics giant is mulling a rare recall program for the smartphone released last month for both Korean and global consumers by offering free battery exchange and repair. The phone, however, won’t be refunded or exchanged to another model.

It is the first time for the country’s largest electronics maker to have a mass-scale recalls due to the smartphone battery defect and is estimated to have sold about 400,000 units in Korea alone.

Samsung Electronics on Thursday after working-level discussion tentatively concluded that a defect in the battery is blamed for the explosion.

The problem batteries have been supplied by Samsung SDI Co., a battery making unit of Samsung Group. The company is still investigating what has caused the fault in battery.

Samsung Electronics closed Thursday at 1,587,000 won ($1,418.23), down 33,000 won or 2.04 percent, from yesterday. Samsung SDI shares also dropped by 7,000 won or 6.06 percent to 108,500 won.
