Daesung Heat Pump, an unlisted subsidiary of South Korea’s Daesung Industrial Co., said on Monday it has joined hands with Italy’s Solid Power to jointly develop and distribute solid oxide (SO) fuel cells.

SO fuel cells are regarded as next-generation fuel cells for high efficiency.

The two signed an agreement to initially co-develop and distribute 10-kilowatt fuel cells in Korea. As part of the agreement, Daesung Heat Pump is forming an R&D organization.

In the fuel cell market, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are mainly used in electric utilities, portable power and transportation. Phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFC) or molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) are usually for high-efficiency power generation systems.

The company said it will bolster its fuel cell business in Korea with its participation in Environment & Energy Tech (ENTECH 2016) to be held in Busan on Tuesday.

Solid Power is an Italian company that develops and manufactures high temperature electroceramic devices based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. It runs plants in Italy and Germany and research centers in Switzerland and Australia. It is said to be a rapidly progressing company with strong presence in Europe.
