Hyundai Mobis tailors parking brake for pickup trucks

South Korea’s largest auto parts supplier Hyundai Mobis Co. said Monday that it developed a new electronic drum-in-hat (eDIH) park and brake system customized for large pickup trucks. There are typically two types of electronic parking brakes - a caliper-integrated brake and the top hat drum style - used to hold a vehicle and prevent it from rolling backwards on a hill. Caliper-integrated ones are mounted on sedans and recreational vehicles, while the latter is opted for bigger vehicles such as trucks and buses.

Hyundai Mobis’ new brake system, eDIH park brake’s clamp force is 1.5 times stronger and 30 times smaller than conventional EPBs. It can also be applied on smaller vehicles.

According to market research firm IHS Inc., the market size of pickup trucks in North America is estimated to reach around 3.8 million units, 20 percent of which are full-size ones requiring eDIH park brakes.

Hyundai Mobis claims its system is the first kind customized for large pickup trucks.
