South Korea’s KTB Investment & Securities Co. invested in an aircraft as part of efforts to diversify its investment portfolio after announcing that it would become a security company specializing in alternative investments.

According to the investment banking industry on Sunday, KTB Investment & Securities signed an agreement with a Chinese aircraft leasing company to invest $85.6 million funded by domestic insurers and mutual aid associations in an Airbus A330-300 run by Singapore Airlines. The investment is expected to generate 3 to 6 percent annual returns over the next six years after the leasing term with Singapore Airlines expires.

Securities companies are growing more and more interested in aircraft financing that allows investors to make profits by lending money to purchase or build airplanes or operating lease directly. Aviation finance has recently become an attractive alternative investment as contracts with airlines that boast high creditworthiness provide reliability and the cost of used airplanes usually remains high.

The industry watchers believe that the KTB’s investment would prompt other Korean securities companies to tap into in the Chinese aviation market as it makes the first case for a domestic financial company explore into non-real estate alternative market in China.
