LG CNS Co., an information technology solution unit of South Korea’s large conglomerate LG Group, said it began test-service of automatic teller machines utilizing finger vein authentication for the first time in the nation amid increasing biometrics application for verification.

The IT solution company announced on Monday that it released ATM based on finger vein authentication developed by joint venture LG-Hitachi and installed it first on ATMs of BNK Busan Bank.

Under finger vein authentication technology, it is impossible to forge or falsify identity as it uses vein pattern in fingers. The company maximized security by encoding finger vein data.

“The LG-Hitachi finger vein authentication has 80 percent market share in Japan and it is credible as various financial institutions in Central and South America and Europe, as well as Japan, have used the authentication” said an official of the company. Authentication process is simple. When a user puts a finger on a scanner of an ATM, the ATM identifies the user within one second.

The smart ATM with finger vein authentication is unmanned smart financial equipment that helps users get banking services without bank tellers. It allows users to get various banking services as it verifies their real name without seeing faces. For example, customers could open new deposit and installment savings accounts and apply for internet banking. Issuing a security card is also possible.

“We plan to develop a finger vein authentication service for smartphones, as well as simple payment,” said Lee Seok-hee, an official of LG-Hitachi.
