South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. is seeking talents across the globe who can help it develop innovative robot technologies and catch up its rivals that have already built extensive expertise in the rapidly growing global robot industry.

According to Samsung Electronics on Wednesday, its Global Technology Center is recruiting global doctoral level employees with specialty in robot development, automation technology, and manufacturing processing until August 28. The company is especially looking for professionals with expertise in robot manufacturing, machine learning, action recognition, as well as regulation and signal processing technologies. It is also accepting applicants with master degrees in the related areas if they have years of prior working experience at related companies based in foreign countries.

Samsung Electronics is capable to develop and manufacture industrial robots with current workforce, but it lacks talents who can help it develop humanoid robots that require more advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.

Many global companies like U.S. tech giant Google Inc., Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp., and Honda Motor Co., have been aggressively investing in the robot industry that is poised to flourish, and they have already made progress in developing innovative robots and related solutions.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, the world’s robot industry has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 11 percent since 2007. The robot industry is estimated to grow to 70 trillion won ($62.5 billion) in value by 2020, which is the market size of the current global home appliance market. The growth in the global robot market is expected to accelerate amid growing number of aging populations who require personal nursing robots.

Samsung Electronics aims to develop robots that are capable of providing various services to humans in general, in addition to those that provide factory automation technology. The company has capability when it comes to hardware, but not enough technical skills when it comes to software that includes artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. To expedite the development of advanced robot technologies, Samsung Electronics is said to be also considering mergers and acquisitions with companies that own innovative related technologies.

The Global Technology Center is an independent business unit that is not part of any specific business division within Samsung Electronics, but handles overall management so that other production units can function efficiently. It develops necessary manufacturing processing for each production unit including televisions, mobile device, and home appliances, and aims to research related preceding technology.
