Unionized workers at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. regarded as dovish among Korean shipbuilders without a single walkout over the last two decades will likely put an end to their long-held reputation. After two-day vote, the workers agreed on Thursday to join the joint strike proposed by the union of its parent company Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The approval ratio reached 64 percent of 2,676 workers.

The union’s rare strike decision came at the worst time for the company. Hyundai Mipo secured $160 million orders in the first half, just 5 percent of its annual target of $3 billion and 71 percent less from a year ago. Its bigger sister company Hyundai Heavy Industries also secured only 4.1 billion won worth orders in the January - June period, 21 percent of the annual target.

The unions of the shipbuilding units of Hyundai are protesting to their management’s streamlining plans on top of refusal to better terms including salary hike in this year’s collective bargaining.

The National Labor Relations Commission conditioned that the union hold another talks with the management before endorsing the request for strike.

If the talks fall through, the union plans to separately go on a strike if it cannot join the Aug.31 joint strike with other Hyundai shipyards.
