South Korea delayed decision on the renewed plea from Google Inc. for access to the nation’s mapping data for its global-wide services. It pushed the date from Wednesday to November.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport overseeing mapping policies said the government needs to give broader and longer thought on the issue as national security is at stake. The decision was made after a closed-door meeting with officials from various ministries on Wednesday.

The Korean government will hold another meeting with officials from the relevant ministries and make a decision by November 23. But the date was not offered as a deadline as the government is willing to consider the matter for another 60 days after November 23 after further discussions with Google.

Google made the same request in 2010, but was rejected because of the South Korea`s National Security Law and concerns about exposure in highly classified military infrastructure location data in the country technically at war and in nuclear threat from North Korea.

Experts expected it would be challenging for Google to get permission to use Korean map data outside Korea, but the key issue behind was a matter of choosing either the protection of the Korean mapping industry or deregulation and market opening for growth.

A government official said many officials indicated that there would be a lot of positive changes if Google gains greater access to Korea’s advanced mapping data. Mapping has become pivotal to the new technologies and businesses thriving on location-based and navigation services. For instance, the augmented reality game Pokemon Go cannot be available in Korea because it is based on Google Maps.
