The Seoul Global Startup Center (Seoul GSC) aimed to support Korean startups to go global will officially open on August 26.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Thursday that it chose 50 companies that will compete to get aid from the GSC business incubation program, funded by the Seoul city government and run by Seoul-based business incubator Rehoboth. After final review, 40 teams can launch their venture at the center.

The Seoul city government in July unveiled a plan to foster the growth of the country’s startups through the GSC business incubation program designed to provide selected companies assistance in work visa application, legal and financial consultations, patent applications as well as fund-raising procedures. It launched the program in hopes of attracting foreign talents to Korea and developing it as home to promising startups run by foreign nationals.

However, among the 50 selected teams, non-Korean nationals accounted for less than half, numbering 76 of total 180 members, according to the Seoul GSC. Among the 76 non-Korean members, 21 were Americans, three Chinese and two Vietnamese.

According to the Seoul city government, there were some innovative ideas that could promote multicultural exchanges, spread Hallyu (Korean wave) content globally via multi-channel network (MCN) using the Internet of Things, and helping the disabled.

The Seoul GSC center is set up on the third floor of Najin Electronic World’s building number 14 in Yongsan, central Seoul, on a floor area of 2,254 square meters.
