A cholera case occurred in South Korea for the first time in 15 years, sending alert to local disease prevention authorities. This is the first cholera case infected in the nation.

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention announced on Tuesday that a 59-year-old man living in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, was confirmed with cholera, and the organization has been doing epidemiologic investigation to trace the infection route. Authorities believe he could have infected by consuming contaminated food in the country since he had not gone abroad this year.

As food- or water-borne disease, cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera. Mass infection could occur in places where water supply facilities and sewerage are not separated. It is not as much infectious as air-borne disease. Cholera is less infectious than dysentery and Norovirus.

The disease has a latent period of two to three days and usually causes diarrhea without stomachache and dehydration with vomits.

He was reported by a medical organization as a suspected case of cholera last Thursday and became a confirmed case through a laboratory test on Monday. After being quarantined and treated, he recovered and left the hospital. His family -his wife, daughter and son- have no symptoms and are in good condition.

The disease prevention authorities believe that he might have been infected with the disease while eating imported food and has launched an epidemiologic investigation of restaurants he visited.
