South Korea’s SPC Co., the parent company of leading bakery and patisserie brand Paris Baguette, announced on Monday that it opened its first store in Chengdu, one of the largest cities in southwest China. SPC has been running thriving bakery business in major cities in the east coast including Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Dalian but it entered inland China for the first time.

Southwest China encompasses Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province and the region has been recently emerging with the help of the Chinese government’s development policy of inland areas. Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan Province, is a major city in southwest China, with a population of 14 million. Starting with the opening in Chengdu, the company plans to expand its presence by going west to the inner China regions.

“We have thoroughly prepared to enter southwest China for four years, conducting extensive market research, and we plan to open an additional store in Chengdu within this year and have 80 stores in total in southwest China by 2020,” said an official of the Chinese operation of Paris Baguette.

The latest Paris Baguette store opening in Chengdu with 100 seats on a site of 270 square meters is a bakery café located at the city’s major shopping mall, MiXc Shopping Mall, in a core commercial area of the city. With 30 terrace seats, it would offer simple meals including sandwiches and salad.
