South Korean President Park Geun-hye will attend the Group of 20 (G20) summit in China and forums with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) early next month, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said on Thursday.

Park will stay in Hangzhou on September 4-5 for the summit of the advanced and emerging economies, where she may hold a meeting with her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Attention is being drawn to whether they would meet to discuss diplomatic breakthroughs amid growing tensions over the planned deployment of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system to South Korea.

Korean authorities said nothing has been determined regarding the possible Seoul-Beijing summit.

China has objected to the THAAD deployment on the peninsula, arguing it is a threat to Chinese national security and the strategic balance in the region.

Following the G-20 meeting, Park will travel to the Laotian capital of Vientiane on September 7 for summit meetings related to the 10-member ASEAN. Park will also attend the ASEAN-plus-three summit that includes the leaders of China and Japan on September 7. The following day, she will attend the East Asia Summit.

On September 8-9, Park will pay an official visit to Laos, which was arranged on the invitation of Laotian President Bounnhang Vorachith. The two leaders will discuss trade, investment, development and other areas of mutual concern.

Before the G20 gathering, President Park will fly to Vladivostok, Russia, early next month to attend the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
