The world’s largest shipbuilding group Hyundai Heavy Industries Group’s three shipbuilders, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., will embark on a joint strike from August 31 in protest to the restructuring plans.

“Our strike won’t last just one day. We will continue to protest until the management ends its restructuring plans and agree to our wage terms,” labor unions of the companies said in a press conference in Ulsan City Hall on Wednesday. They made it clear that they strongly oppose to the layoff and streamlining plans.

“Hyundai Heavy Industries recorded a surplus of 880 billion won ($794 million) in the first half and the figure could have reached 1.14 trillion won if the company did not push ahead with early retirement program that cost severance compensation of 260 billion won,” the labor union insisted.

The company was pursuing spinoff without any discussion with the union. Various overtime allowances and welfare programs are being scaled back, it complained.

The union of the three shipyards also calls for an increase of 90,000 won in monthly base pay.
