South Korean authorities have launched a massive investigation into the country’s all car importers after Volkswagen was found to have submitted fabricated test results.

"We asked National Institute of Environmental Research to launch a preliminary investigation after a whistleblower’s report that Volkswagen’s document cheating is a rampant practice in the imported car industry (in Korea),” said an unnamed official at the Ministry of Environment on Wednesday. “Depending on the result of the preliminary investigation, we will conduct a follow-up investigation including a request of certified documents to their headquarters if necessary.”

Typically, cars on the same engine have similar emissions and noise levels so they are classified as the same type regardless of variants such as two- or four-wheel drive, as well as manual or automatic models. When a key model is certified, its variants are regarded as certified. Market watchers say that like Volkswagen not a few imported car companies have changed the name of a specific car on the certified document of performance results in order to advance their time to market in Korea.

The National Institute of Environmental Research already began to review certified documents of importers of foreign brand cars. It plans to compare these certified documents issued overseas and in Korea by model. Cars subject to the preliminary probe include 110 recently certified diesel car types (Euro 6 models) from 11 manufacturers. The preliminary probe results are expected to be available in two to three months.

Earlier this month, the South Korean government revoked licenses on 83,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles of 80 models in 32 variants that gained certification on falsified documents.
