South Korean President Park Geun-hye granted special presidential pardons to 4,876 people including CJ Group chairman Lee Jae-hyun and other 13 businessmen on Friday in commemoration of the 71st Liberation Day which falls on August 15.

The government also gave 730 special paroles and commuted sentences for more than 1.4 million people facing administrative punishments whose crimes are related to their livelihood.

CJ Group chairman Lee was the only high-profile business leader who was on the list. Conglomerate heads and executives and politicians imprisoned for corruption usually enjoyed special pardons on major holidays.

The government said Lee was let out because he has been suffering from a number of health complications. Other closely-watched business names such as Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn, SK Group Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won and LIG Nex1 Vice Chairman Koo Bon-sang were not included. Politicians, civil servants and heavy offenders were also excluded from the Aug. 15 pardon.

Justice Minister Kim Hyun-woong said that the government hopes the special pardons can contribute to promoting national unity and economic revitalization as it is designed primarily to help ordinary people of minor crimes to get back to their lives.
