According to DRAM Exchange, a semiconductor market research company, on Friday, Samsung Electronics’ DRAM sales rose 8.7 percent in the second quarter to $4.32 billion (about 4.75 trillion won) from $3.97 billion in the first quarter. SK Hynix also recorded $2.41 billion in the second quarter in sales, up 4 percent from $2.32 billion in the first quarter.
Both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix had been hit hard by plunging DRAM chip prices in the first quarter to see their sales drop 16.6 percent and 19.2 percent, each, from the previous quarter.
Market share of Samsung Electronics in the second quarter increased 1 percentage point from the first quarter to 47.4 percent while that of SK Hynix slightly fell to 26.5 percent from 27.1 percent during the same period. U.S.-based Micron Technology Inc., the third largest company in the DRAM market, saw its sales in the second quarter rise 8.8 percent on quarter to drive up market share by 0.5 percentage point. Meanwhile, sales of Taiwan-based semiconductor companies, Nanya and Powerchip Technology, in the second quarter declined 6.3 percent to 12.3 percent from the previous quarter.
In market share by nation, Korea posted 74.9 percent, beating out the U.S. with 19.2 percent and Taiwan with 5.9 percent. It is 0.5 percentage point higher than 74.4 percent in the first quarter but it is slightly lower than 75.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.
