The Galaxy Note7, Samsung Electronics Co.’s flagship premium smartphone that has been heralded for its upgraded features such as an iris scanner, stylus pen and waterproof feature since its launch early this month, is again praised for its enhanced display performance that is said to have set the bar for smartphone displays.

Global image quality evaluation organization DisplayMate said on Tuesday (local time) that it rated the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display mounted in the Galaxy Note 7 as Excellent A, the highest grade the organization can offer, citing the display’s advanced performance providing clear images even in broad daylight. The organization added that the Galaxy Note 7’s display is the best performing mobile display it has ever tested.

The smartphone received good reviews from DisplayMate in the category of screen brightness, performance in high ambient lighting and color gamut. As smartphones are used outdoors more frequently compared to other IT devices, performance in high ambient lighting even under the sun is important. Performance in high ambient lighting is mostly influenced by display brightness and screen reflectance.

According to the DisplayMate’s analysis, the Galaxy Note 7’s display outperformed its predecessor the Galaxy Note 5 in almost every display lab test. With its maximum brightness of more than 1,000 nits, the new premium smartphone became the mobile device with the brightest display ever. The 1,000 nits mean the brightness of 1,000 candles glowing on a square meter site. Its reflectance also measured at 4.6%, one of the lowest ever tested by DisplayMate. Higher reflection disturbs screen watching and increases eye fatigue. But the screen of the Galaxy Note 7 allowed viewing or reading even under relatively high ambient lighting, such as bright sunlight, without causing much reflection during the latest test.

As the first smartphone to incorporate mobile high dynamic range (HDR) technology, the Galaxy Note7 also received high scores for the newest performance enhancement feature developed for the latest ultra high-definition (UHD) TVs, expanding the color, contrast and brightness of video content through special image processing.
