Rep. Lee Jung-hyun, a confidant of President Park Geun-hye, was elected as the new leader of the ruling Saenuri Party at the party’s national convention in Seoul on Tuesday, marking the first time for a politician from the country’s liberal-leaning southwestern Honam region to take the helm of the conservative party with stronghold in Gyeongsang Province.

The third-term lawmaker of the ruling party with rare representation from Suncheon, South Jeolla, drew 44,421 votes, or 40.9 percent, beating four-term lawmaker Joo Ho-young by a large margin, who received 31,946 votes. They were followed by Lee Ju-young (21,614 votes) and Han Sun-kyo (19,757 votes) who also joined the leadership race.

“I declare that from this moment no pro-Park or non-Park factions shall exist. We will turn the party into one that serves for the people to once again win the love of the people,” the 57-year-old lawmaker said.

Lee’s resounding victory reaffirms that the pro-Park faction within the party remains as the mainstream force despite landslide defeat in the previous general elections. The non-Park lawmakers strived to gain leadership by failing to unite vote.

Lee served as Park’s chief secretary for political affairs and for public affairs. This is the first time in the history of the conservative party that a lawmaker from the Jeolla province ― a traditional stronghold for the liberal and dissident camp ― won the chairmanship.

In Tuesday’s election, the combined ballots by party members and delegates accounted for 70 percent of the election results, while public opinion polls made up for 30 percent.
