Seoul Semiconductor Co., a Kosdaq-listed light-emitting diode (LED) producer in Korea, will invest total 300 billion won ($274.3 million) to build and operate an LED assembly facility in Vietnam to make faster inroads into the Southeast Asian market.

Seoul Semiconductor said on Tuesday that it has received approval from the Vietnamese provincial government to build a LED production factory in the Southeast Asian country’s northern province of Ha Nam.

The Korean company will first invest 10 billion won to build the plant on a 75,000 square meter site with an aim to start operation in 2019 and then spend rest of total 300 billion won in the following years to run the factory and expand business in country as well as other parts of Southeast Asia. It plans to gradually increase the number of employees for its Vietnamese operation after hiring 200 local employees by 2019.

Seoul Semiconductor expects its investment in Vietnam to help its cost competitiveness by taking advantage of cheap and young labor force in Vietnam and pave the way for its long-term plan to increase presence in Southeast Asian markets, an unnamed official at Seoul Semiconductor said.

The monthly minimum wage of Vietnam is $155 as of 2016, which is about 59 percent lower than that of China.
