South Korea’s tech giant LG Electronics Inc. said on Thursday that it has released an ultralow temperature freezer that can be used at home.

Compared to currently available household freezers whose temperature goes to as low as below 30 degrees Celsius, the temperature of LG Electronics’ latest freezer can be set to as low as below 60 degrees Celsius. Freezers with such low temperatures have so far been only available for commercial use such as at high-end restaurants, laboratories, and hospitals.

According to LG Electronics, the company has developed the latest freezer with the model name of A255WD as a growing number of consumers purchase groceries in large quantity at discount stores and store them for a long period of time. The company has also taken into consideration that a large number of consumers tend to enjoy groceries at the freshest state - even those that should be consumed quickly and those that can be purchased only at certain seasons and needs to be stored.

LG Electronics said that its ultralow temperature freezer will maintain the freshness of stored food at the level when they are first bought. It freezes groceries 1.5 times faster than do ordinary freezers, reducing time that can form ice crystals inside the food. Most groceries form ice crystals in temperatures between below 1 and below 5 degrees. These crystals transform overall structure and affects freshness of stored food.

LG Electronics’ new household freezer also allows groceries to be stored longer as the ultralow temperature environment freezes activity of cellular tissues, microorganisms, and bacteria inside the food. The 231-liter freezer is priced at 1.4 million won ($1,260).
