Samsung Electronics chose iris scanning for its first biometric applications on Galaxy Note 7 because irides are up-to-date most sure in security authentication, said Koh Dong-jin, president of mobile communications business of the South Korean electronics behemoth during a press conference after the unpacking event for new Galaxy Note phone in New York.

The company’s iris technology - developed over three and a half years - is as advanced as to recognize the irides across eyeglasses or contact lenses, he said.

The company is engaged in talks with banks in many countries for mobile banking arrangement using the new Galaxy platform.

The president lauded the signature S Pen another significant feature of the new phone. Koh is credited for inventing the Galaxy brand and stylus pen for the Galaxy Note series in 2011.

“We have consistently improved S Pen feature and we made it waterproof and dustproof so the pen works even when the screen is wet or dusty,” he said.

The latest follow-up to the big-screen phone skipped to 7 after last year’s Note 5 to highlight it has the same specifications of the Galaxy S7 that had been highly popular since its launch earlier in the year, augmented with iris scanning and unmatched stylus pen function.

The company acquired Joyent, Inc., a leading public and private cloud provider, located in Silicon Valley in June and is interested in acquiring another company. He believes that merger and acquisition is more cost and time-saving means to secure new technology.

“Cloud is not only space for backup for smartphones and it is necessary to create the ecosystem for automotive Internet of Things (IoT), home IoT, wearable devices and smartphones,” he said.
