South Korean President Park Geun-hye will hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September in hopes to draw understanding from Moscow on Korea’s recent decision to deploy the U.S. advanced missile defense system on the country and improve relations amid concerns of renewed ideological front among Moscow, Beijing, and Pyongyang.

Korea’s Presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said on Wednesday that Park will travel to Vladivostok, Russia, to attend the second Eastern Economic Forum on September 2-3. She will give a keynote address at the main session of the economic forum.

Park has accepted Putin’s invitation for a summit on the sidelines of her trip, said a Cheong Wa Dae official. They will discuss various issues, including North Korea’s nuclear arms program. Park’s visit to Russia will serve to reciprocate Putin’s visit to Korea in November 2013, Cheong Wa Dae said. The upcoming summit will be Park’s fourth one with the Russian leader since taking office.

Park’s state visit to Russia comes after Korea’s recent decision to deploy the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area defense battery system (THAAD) has angered China and Russia. Blasting Seoul and Washington over the THAAD deployment, China and Russia have jointly submitted a statement to the United Nations last month, opposing its deployment.

The Russian government launched the annual Eastern Economic Forum last year with goals to attract investment into the Far Eastern Asia and reinvigorate regional development. The event will be attended by government officials and businessmen from Korea, Japan, China and ASEAN nations.
