China has stopped authorizing multiple entry visas to South Koreans without prior consultation and explanations, raising suspicion that the move could be as a part of Beijing retaliation campaign against Seoul’s decision to install U.S. antimissile system in Korea.

Multiple travel agencies confirmed on Wednesday that applications for visa for multiple entry that allows Koreans to come and go from China for a year without having to reapply each time before passport expires have recently been denied by the Chinese embassy. They were notified by the Beijing mission that the service no longer is valid for South Korean nationals by phone without being told why and when it would resume.

Visa and travel agencies that have been servicing temporary resident visa applications for Korean visitors to China now are telling customers to get single entry or visitor visa.

Multi-entry visas are mostly sought by businessmen, students, and entertainers that need to frequent visits to China.

The last time Beijing stopped authorization of multi-entry visas was in 2008 ahead of Beijing Summer Olympics for security reasons.

China has been scaling down or cancelling state-sponsored group tours and finding fault with Korean products like cosmetics after South Korea and the United States jointly announced a controversial plan to install the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense in southern part of Korea for deterrence against North Korean missile and nuclear threat despite repeated opposition from Beijing on concerns that China would fall under radar surveillance of the U.S. missile system.
