South Korea’s Seoul Semiconductor Co. may have hit blockbuster with its newly developed light emitting diode (LED) Wicop as it became the must feature for camera flash for smartphones.

The semiconductor company has been supplying the LED products for camera flash to Apple Inc. from last year. Chinese smartphone makers have all rushed to install Wicop in their new smartphone models.

Buoyed by the product’s popularity, the company’s operating profit ballooned to 45.6 billion won ($41 million) last year from a mere 2.6 billion won in 2014. Its sales also jumped to 1.01 trillion won from 939.3 billion won. With sales boost of LED products for smartphone cameras expected in the second half of this year, the company is predicted to post 52.7 billion won in operating profit and 1.03 trillion won in sales for this year.

Seoul Semiconductor’s Wicop has become popular among set makers because it is significantly smaller and lighter than other LED products. “Wicop is 1.5 millimeters long and 1.5 millimeters wide, and yet much brighter,” said CEO Lee Chung-hoon.

The semiconductor company has independently developed the technology of Wicop without packaging process, which added to the price appeal.

Because of its miniscule size, two to three more LEDs can go into the same space, which works well for smartphone makers looking for new features for their camera function.
