Kolon Industries Inc., the chemical and fashion unit of Kolon Group, said Tuesday that it will invest 88.2 billion won ($79.7 million) to build a colorless polyimide (CPI) production line with an aim to complete the construction by the first quarter of 2018.

The company is the first in the world to build such a factory aiming to mass produce CPI film to take the lead the promising market, it claimed. The investment accounts for 4.49 percent of the company’s equity capital on a consolidated basis as of late last year.

CPI is a transparent film like glass, but it can withstand extremely high temperatures and boasts of high flexibility, allowing it to be folded or rolled like paper without damages to its form. It is expected to replace glass for display substrates, including screens for next-generation, foldable smartphones.

The Korean firm will start the construction of a CPI production line in its Gumi plant in North Gyeongsang Province sometime in the third quarter of this year with an aim to complete the construction in the first quarter of 2018, and it is expected to rake in about 200 billion in sales annually. The company may later add the second and the third production lines if the demand goes up.

CPI film can be applied on not only foldable smartphones but also rollable displays and detachable wall displays and many more.

Kang Chung-seock, vice president at the firm said CPI will be a new growth driver of the company.
