South Korea’s state-run utility firm Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) will fly drones to check upon optical ground wires (OPGWs) of transmission towers from August.
The utility company will this year examine 10,000 of 42,372 transmission towers across the country and the rest next year. Regular examination and maintenance of overhead power lines is crucial for smooth power supply and safety.
But examination can be difficult and dangerous because the towers are tall and located in high areas. The company expects to save 7.5 billion won ($6.59 million) a year as drones replacing human work could speed up the process.
