Sweltering heat wave has sent daily power consumption to all-time high levels and reserve rate to this year’s lowest in South Korea, raising alarm about power shortage during summer peak season in August.

According to Korea Power Exchange, Korea’s power consumption hit 81.32 million kilowatts on Tuesday as of 2:30 p.m. to hit a new summer high after 80.5 million kilowatts on the previous day.

Consequently, power reserve ratio slipped to 9.2 percent, or 7.51 million kilowatts on July 11 when consumption hit 78.2 million kilowatts. It was the first time reserve ratio slipped below the 10 percent threshold in two years.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy projected that this summer’s maximum power consumption could reach up to 83.7 million kilowatts in the second and third weeks of August.

But it assured that supply won’t be disrupted and is capable of meeting up to maximum use of 92.1 million kilowatts.

The government is ready to activate 4.18 million kilowatts back-up resources by ramping up yield from coal-fired electrical power generators to prevent the country from facing a state of emergency in its electricity supply, a government official said.

The official noted that in case of emergency, the government plans to secure additional power of 2.52 million kilowatts by introducing incremental power-saving actions.

Meanwhile, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast average temperature for August to be higher than the previous year.
