German automaker Volkswagen AG offered to stop selling 79 models of 32 types sold by its Korean unit in compliance with the South Korean government’s findings on emission test rigging.

The Ministry of Environment earlier said it would cancel its certification of 79 models under Audi Volkswagen Korea and impose a sales ban on those vehicles for numerous irregularities the automaker had committed over the past decade. The ministry will host a public hearing Monday to hear from the German carmaker for the last time before it confirms the decision in the same week.

Audi Volkswagen Korea will draw up specific countermeasures after the government delivers its final verdict. Its voluntary sales suspension ahead of the verdict does not mean it would not compensate for Korean customers, a company official said. It is studying various options, he added.

According to the environment ministry, the controversial 79 models are variants of 32 vehicles under three brands - Audi, Volkswagen, Bentley - among which 65 models are sold in Korea. Other 14 models are either discontinued or no longer sold in Korea. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), Volkswagen shipped total 84 models to Korea in the first half this year and 77 percent of them, or 65 models, will be affected. They include best-sellers, Tiguan 2.0 TDI, which sold 4,164 units in the first half, Golf 2.0 TDI that sold 3,061 units and A6 35 TDI that sold 2,692 units.
