LS Industrial Systems Co. (LSIS), a South Korean electric power systems provider, will carry out a $16.3 million order to manufacture wireless train control system for an urban rail system in the Philippines.

LSIS said in a disclosure statement on Wednesday that it signed a two-year contract worth $16.3 million with Hanwha Corp. to supply communication-based train control systems for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 in Manila, the Philippines.

Hanwha, a trading unit of Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group, previously secured the order for repair and maintenance work on MRT Line 3 control system in Manila from the Filipino transportation ministry.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hanwha will manage the overall project and LSIS will provide the LTran-CX, a communication-based train control system that it developed in 2014. The LTran-CX, which the company claims to have the maximized control over trains through wireless communication of information on train’s location, will be used in the 13.4-kilometer long urban railway that runs across Manila.

The deal sets a milestone for the Korean electric power system provider as it makes LSIS the first Korean company to enter the Filipino urban railway control system market that has been dominated by European firms.
