Samsung Engineering Co., factory and plant constructing arm of Samsung Group, brought about heavy losses upon itself through over-zealousness and poor planning, recklessly securing work beyond its capacity, its chief executive said in recent seminar.

“Various problems happened when a company that was used to workload of 1 trillion won ($877 million) was overwhelmed with 12 trillion won worth,” Park Choong-heum, chief executive and president of Samsung Engineering Co. said during an engineering seminar.

His mea culpa came as a surprise as he had been seated among the audience to the seminar not as a member on the podium as panelists or guest speakers.

Samsung Engineering last year was in danger of being ousted from the stock market upon incurring record operating loss of 1.5 trillion won in the third quarter from oil and gas projects that wiped out nearly a fifth of its market value. It implemented $1.1 billion rights issue in February at a discount rate of 37 percent to meet capital adequacy ratio.

Park, however, denied that the overseas orders were won through rates below market prices.

“There is a limit in cutting the price. The management can authorize 2 percent to 3 percent discount, but cannot cut as much as 10 percent,” he said. Park had been heading Samsung Engineering from August 2013.

The plant engineering is highly sophisticated and complicated field that requires various engineering specialty ranging from machinery to materials. The key is to optimize the diverse capabilities, he said.
