South Korea’s chemical and battery firm LG Chem is set to supply its batteries to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the company said on Sunday. It became the first Korean supplier for NASA and made its footprint in space realm.

The batteries to be supplied to NASA will power the crucial devices for oxygen supply, communication, and radiation detection in the space suits, the company said.

The company’s lithium-ion batteries will replace silver-zinc batteries typically used in aerospace equipments and supplied dominantly by Japanese companies such as GS Yuasa Corp. NASA opted lithium-ion battery cells as they have become cheaper and have longer life than silver-zinc ones.

“We have passed NASA’s safety tests by recording better scores than any other rivals, proving our technological prowess in developing high-performing and safe devices,” said an official from the company. “By strengthening partnership with NASA, we will expand our business in the aerospace market,” said Lee Woong-beom, the head of LG Chem’s battery business division.

With the latest contract with NASA, LG Chem has broadened its business into the space industry. It has been providing its batteries to more than 20 finished-car makers in Korea, America, Europe and China. Last year It advanced into the electric vessel market by striking a deal to supply its batteries for hybrid offshore supply vessel Viking Queen to Norway’s Eidesvik Offshore. It has recently been selected as a battery supplier for drones made by China’s Xiaomi.
