South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co.’s flagship hatchback i30 topped car sales in Australia during the first six months this year, a rank which the Korean carmaker reached for the first time in the Land Down Under.

According to data compiled by Australia’s Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries Friday, Hyundai i30 sold 21,171 units in the first six months, up 45 percent from 15,801 units same period of last year.

As many as 6,432 units were sold alone in June, setting a fresh monthly high in sales and dethroning Toyota Motor Corp.’s pickup truck “Hilux” which topped monthly rank until May.

Last year’s top-seller - Toyota Motor’s compact sedan “Corolla” - and the second most popular model Mazda Motor Corp.’s “Mazda 3” came in third and fourth, respectively.

Hyundai Motor’s flagship sports utility vehicle (SUV) Tucson ranked third in the SUV sales chart having sold 9,609 units in the first half. On the overall scoreboard, it moved up to 12th.

Hyundai Accent sold 8,358 units in the first six months, nearly doubling from the shipment in the same period last year to elbow out Mazda 2 at 7,190 units for the first place in small car category of price tag under $25,000.

Thanks to strong performances of the trio - i30, Tucson and Accent - Hyundai Motor was the third best-selling car brand in the first half in Australia, with combined sales of 54,350 units, up 8.5 percent from 50,099 units on year.
