Unused phone booths across Korea would be refurbished into quick charging stations for electric vehicles as a part of the national campaign to proliferate daily use and vehicles of clean energy, the government said on Thursday. According to the Ministry of Environment, nine electric car charging stations have been installed at inactive phone boxes in four cities - three in Seoul, three in Daegu in North Gyeongsang, two in Suncheon in Jeolla Province, and one in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Service started Friday.

The project to recycle public phone booths has been promoted jointly with KT Linkus, an operator of public pay phone networks. Pay phone boxes have become redundant now that mobile phones have become commonplace. Detailed locations of nine charging stations can be found by visiting www.ev.or.kr [http://www.ev.or.kr], an electric vehicle charging information system managed by the Korea Environment Corporation.

According to the environment ministry, charging fees for all electric vehicles are set at 313.1 won ($0.3) per kilowatt-hour. The government began charging fees for super-chargers in April that take about 30 minutes for full charge. It would cost about 8,700 won to fully charge Hyundai Motor Co.’s Ioniq electric vehicle that would allow owners to travel about 150 kilometers. There are no separate parking fees.

The ministry plans to install quick charging stations at more than 20 unused pay phone booths every year. It also plans to use discount stores across the nation for premise for charge stops. The government pledged to up number of EV charging stations to over 1,400 from current 685 by 2020.
