The unions of Hyundai Motor Co. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. both based in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province, went into a vote on Wednesday whether to go on a strike as early as next week. If the plan is passed, the two powerful unions of the country’s largest automaker and shipyard would go on a joint strike for the first time in 23 years, dealing as a major blow to the fragile recovery in industrial activity and setback to the restructuring in the shipbuilding industry.

The majority of the 47,000 members of Hyundai Motor union are expected to vote in favor of a walkout in Wednesday poll as votes to strike in protest to breakdown in wage negotiations have never been rejected before.

The 16,000 members of Hyundai Heavy Industries’ union will cast their ballots from Wednesday to Friday. Their strike would become legitimate after the vote as the union has already gained mediation suspension approval from the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC). The walkout in protest to the spinoff and streamlining plan can start from Monday.

The two companies are expected to start a partial strike for two hours on July 20 as suggested by the Ulsan branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. The umbrella Korean Metal Worker’s Union plans a six-hour walkout on July 22.
